Your baby’s teething, definition

During teething, your baby’s milk teeth form inside the jaw bones before moving down gradually and emerging from them. They then pierce the gum. Contrary to common preconceptions, it’s not when they pierce the gum that it’s painful. It’s the entire process that takes place before tooth eruption.

Did you know?

Your baby’s teeth begin to form from pregnancy! This is why some medicinal products having harmful effects on teeth are not recommended in pregnant and breastfeeding women. It is in the 6th to 8th week of pregnancy that the first dental development stage takes place in babies. This in when baby’s tooth bud appears and which will produce your infant’s future milk teeth.

At what age does baby start teething and which teeth come through first?

Each baby is different, but usually, the first milk teeth appear between the 4th and 7th month. In which order do the teeth come through?

Between 6 and 16 months

The 8 lateral and central incisors used to cut food.

Between 13 and 24 months

It is the turn of the 4 premolars to come through, used to crush food.

Between 16 and 23 months

The 4 canines, used to tear food.

Between 23 and 33 months

The 4 molars also used to crush food

Once baby’s first 20 teeth have come through, gaps may appear between the milk incisors at around 4-5 years of age. This is completely normal since the jaw develops to leave room for the larger permanent teeth later on.

Additional info

If you are a young parent you will only be experiencing it in a few years’ time but it is never too early to find out about it! At around the age of 6 the first permanent molar grows behind the milk teeth. It comes in addition to baby’s first 20 temporary teeth and it does not wait for a milk tooth to fall out to grow. Be careful as you may not see it come through but taking care of it is very important.

How long does teething last in your baby?

Teething lasts 8 days on average each time. This corresponds to tooth eruption. So for 20 milk teeth, 160 days of teething are required on average. Rest assured though, it takes place in several stages. But it is preferable to be aware of it as over 4 months, your baby may go through different stages and suffer from different teething symptoms.

  • Fever for 2 or 3 days (not exceeding 38°)
  • Soft stools
  • Red cheeks
  • Excess saliva in the mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Crabby mood
  • Sleep cycle disturbed
  • Swollen gums

Depending on your baby’s teething symptoms, here is how to relieve them.
