Here is everything you need to know about teething
What is teething?
Teething is when the milk teeth move down inside the gum, before piercing it. We often tend to think that the tooth piercing the gum is what causes the pain but it is caused more by everything that is going on before tooth eruption. The pain can be totally different from one child to another. It can be severe or mild or there may be no pain at all.
Age at which the first teeth appear
On average, the first milk teeth appear between the 4th and 7th month but exactly when your baby’s teeth come through is not an exact science, each child is different. The order in which your baby’s teeth come through is also random.
How long teething lasts
Teething (which corresponds to the eruption of a tooth) usually lasts around 8 days. It takes around 160 days for your baby’s first 20 milk teeth to come through… 4 months during which they may go through different stages and suffer from various teething symptoms.
Different teething symptoms
If there are numerous teething symptoms, it does not always mean they are related to teething (especially if they persist). For an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment if necessary, we recommend you always consult your paediatrician. Here is a list of the different symptoms likely to occur with teething:
Fever
It usually lasts 2 or 3 days and does not exceed 38°C.
Soft stools
Even if this symptom may not last long, it may cause nappy rash which can be very unpleasant for your baby. Ensure your look after their nappy area and look out for any patches and spots. If you wish to protect from and prevent nappy rash you can use a nappy cream.
Red cheeks
Redness can affect the entire face. If it is the case, there is not much to be done except wait for it to subside.
Excess saliva in the mouth
There is not much to be done here either…Bibs are your best bet for drooling!
Loss of appetite
With a tendency to chew on anything and everything! Ensure you watch what your baby puts in their mouth and why not get hold of some teething rings for example. Tip: you can place them in the freezer as the cold sensation soothes your baby’s gums in preparation for the 1st tooth.
Crabbiness
Your baby may be grumpy or cry more than usual throughout the day… Once again, there is no miracle cure, except perhaps cuddles and a lot of patience.
Restless nights
And impacted sleep train as a result. During this time, even if your baby has got into a night-time routine, everything can get messed up. The pain may stop them sleeping properly.
Swollen gums
It stands to reason, since they are put under great strain during teething. We have a solution to relieve swollen gums.
